When you’re looking to buy a Handi Quilter longarm quilting machine, it’s important to do your research. Not only do you want make the right decision about which machine will be the right fit for the type of quilting you do, you also want to learn about the retailer you will purchase from. You want to establish a good working relationship with your retailer so you feel confident when you are first getting to know your new machine. Here are 7 questions you should ask your retailer as you consider your purchase.
Why I’m qualified
Hi, I’m Mary Beth Krapil, Handi Quilter National Educator. I’ve been traveling world-wide teaching classes at Handi Quilter retailer’s shops for 16 years. Handi Quilter boasts a network of 350+ retailers in North America alone. Each shop has had in-person training at Handi Quilter headquarters in North Salt Lake, UT and has the on-going support of Handi Quilter. I will share some of the important considerations for choosing your retailer.
Questions to ask your Retailer
1. Do you offer in-home set up?
You may want to have someone from the shop come to set your machine up for you. Ask whether set-up is an option and if there is an additional fee. The fee can vary depending on the distance the retailer needs to travel and which machine and/or Pro-Stitcher you choose. Some retailers do not charge a set-up fee. The machine you choose determines if set-up help will be necessary. Stationary machines are simple to set up. Movable machines are more complex because you need to assemble the frame and make sure it is level for the best performance of the machine.
2. How is basic training offered?
It’s essential to find a retailer that offers education and training. As a matter of fact, training on the basic operation of the machine is always included when you purchase a Handi Quilter machine. Our retailers are required to train you on the operation of the frame and machine. They teach you the basics like threading the machine, winding the bobbin, adjusting the tension. Also changing the needle, changing the foot, loading the fabric on the frame (if a movable machine). You’ll need to know what all the buttons on the display do and how to adjust your settings for the type of quilting you do. If you also purchase a Pro-Stitcher, you’ll receive training on the basic operation of Pro-Stitcher as well.
Look for retailers that provide classes, workshops, and one-on-one training sessions to help you get started with your new machine. This support can significantly enhance your quilting experience and help you maximize the machine’s potential.
Some retailers give that training in your home. Others ask you to come to their shop to be trained. You might get one-on-one training from a shop staff member. Or you might attend a getting-started class with other new owners. It is good to know what to expect.
3. Is on-going training available?
Look for a retailer that provides classes, workshops, and maybe even a Handi Quilter Club to help you get started with your new machine and to continue to expand your skills in the future. Many retailers are more than just places to buy machines; they foster a sense of community among quilters. Look for retailers that host events, Handi Quilter clubs, or other get-togethers to meet other owners. Connecting with other longarm quilters can be so much fun and provide valuable resources for improving your skills and creativity. This support can significantly enhance your quilting experience and help you maximize the machine’s potential.
4. Are shop employees experienced with the use of the machines?
When you have questions about your new machine, you’ll be glad to know you can call the shop and someone is always there who has the experience and knowledge needed to help you. You want the retailer and their employees able to explain things about the machine in a way you can understand. If you can feel comfortable asking questions, then you know you’ve found a great retailer.
5. Do you have an on-staff, Handi Quilter trained technician?
Check the retailer’s customer service policies, including repair services. The right retailer will provide comprehensive support, including troubleshooting, maintenance tips, and access to parts. This can be particularly important if you encounter any issues down the line.
Handi Quilter recommends having your machine serviced every 2 years or 10 million stitches, whichever comes first. Usually your retailer will have you bring your machine head in to their shop for this. It sounds daunting right? Such a big machine, and you have to remove it from the frame?!! It’s really not hard to do. I have the 26″ Infinity and I am all of 5 feet zero inches tall. And I can do it myself. I put the machine in the back seat of my car. With a pillow in front of it, I put the seat belt around my baby and off we go for her spa appointment. Watch THIS video about taking your machine for a spa day.
Some retailers do offer in-home service. So if that is important to you, be sure to ask that question. Also ask what the fees or charges would be for this service. The same applies to repairs if needed.
Also ask about wait time for maintenance and repairs. Will you need an appointment? Is the technician full-time or part-time?
If taking your machine to the retailer would not be feasible, and they do not offer in-home tech services, you can ship your machine for maintenance or repairs. We recommend saving the box your machine comes in if you ever need to ship. It has a form-fitting foam insert that will protect the machine during transport. These boxes are quite costly, so it is worth saving.
6. Has the shop received the HQ Way Award?
Handi Quilter holds it’s retailers to very high standards. Some go above and beyond our basic requirements and we recognize them with the annual HQ Way Award. There is a long list of criteria the retailer must attain in order to become an HQ Way retailer.
You can find a list of the 2023 HQ Way retailers at the bottom of this page. The 2024 awards will be announced in early 2025. You’ll also see plaques or trophies for HQ Way proudly displayed in their shops. These retailers are the “Best of the Best”!
7. What do your customers say about you?
A happy longarm owner who is confidently using their machine to finish quilts is your best recommendation. Look for online reviews, testimonials, and ratings. Websites like Google Reviews, Yelp, and quilting forums can provide valuable insights into other customers’ experiences. Our Facebook group , Handi Quilter Community, has over 22,500 members at this writing. Join the group and ask questions. Talk with other longarm quilters at your guild. A reputable retailer should have a track record of excellent customer service and satisfaction.
