Circles are a popular shape in quilt design, and for good reason. They are versatile, easy to work with, and can be used to create a wide variety of effects.
I recently attended the AQS quilt show in DesMoines, IA and I noticed circles were evident in a great number of lovely quilts. Let’s take a look.
Why Circles?
There are a number of reasons why the circle shape is so pleasing to the eye.
Symmetry:
- Circles are perfectly symmetrical, which means that they look the same from any angle. This symmetry is aesthetically pleasing to the human brain.
The symmetry of the quilt above is fantastic. The balance just makes you happy.
Circles are incorporated into the quilting as well as the applique. The use of a contrasting thread really makes the most out of this amazing quilting.
Flow:
- Circles have a sense of flow and movement. This is because there is no beginning or end to a circle. The eye can simply follow the curve of the circle around and around.
Pathfinder is an appropriate name for this quilt as your eye follows the path of the circle taking in the amazing applique and quilting.
Once again, use of contrasting thread adds another dimension to the quilt.
Circles find their way into the quilting designs as well!
This grid design that alternates circles with straight lines that form diamond shapes is so eye-catching.
Circles defined by teeny-tiny stipple on the appliqued feather shapes lend beautiful texture.
Efficiency:
- Circles are the most efficient shape for enclosing a given area. This means that they are able to hold the maximum amount of space with the least amount of perimeter. This efficiency is also aesthetically pleasing to the human brain.
The color strategy of this quilt is efficiently portrayed by the appliqued circles.
Organic forms:
- Circles are often found in nature, in everything from the sun and moon to flowers and trees. This association with nature makes circles seem familiar and inviting.
Overall, there are many reasons why people find circles pleasing to the eye. The circle shape is symmetrical, flowing, efficient, and often found in nature. It is also associated with positive emotions such as happiness, peace, and unity. All of these factors contribute to the circle’s aesthetic appeal.
I’ll simply share some more of the circle quilts I saw in DesMoines so you can enjoy the simple and elegant beauty of the circle shape (and some beautiful quilts).
So go quilt some circles!
