Quilt-a-long Selecting Fabric and Cutting

Have you started on your Seeing Stars quilt-a-long quilt? It’s not too late! This month (March) we are selecting fabric and cutting. I will share my progress and thoughts as we go. My friend Pam is also going to quilt along and I’ll share her approach as well.

Selecting Fabrics

My Choices

Since this quilt is mostly scrappy, I started with a fat quarter pack from my stash that was very “well-aged”.  It gave me a start on my color palette. Then I added in some additional fat quarters for more variety.

I wanted to follow the hack that cut the large 0n-point squares as one piece. That will be such an awesome space for quilting!

Since quilting shows best on light-colored, solid-reading fabrics, I chose a light yellow super-subtle print for those squares.

I whittled down my choices a bit since I want this quilt to be soft, so I eliminated the darker colors.

Before starting on the cutting I took the time to color the coloring page in the Hints and Hacks pdf. You can download it here.

This will help with the cutting and also with the piecing.

I also like to starch my fabric before cutting. I lay out a plastic shower curtain and spray the back of the fabric with starch til it is wet. Stay-Flo liquid starch diluted 50:50 with water is my starch of choice. I apply it with a small 1/2 gallon garden sprayer.

Then I hang the fabric til it’s almost dry.

When it is barely damp I press the fabric on the front. Spraying the back and pressing the front keeps my iron cleaner.

Pam’s choices

My friend, Pam, chose a red, white and blue color palette. She also went to her stash when selecting fabric. Pam plans to donate this quilt to her Quilts of Valor chapter.

She got her cutting done lickety-split.

She is going to use edge-to-edge quilting for her quilt. So she came up a brilliant hack for those large diamonds. She is going to add a pieced star to the center of that space. That’s the gold fabric you see in her selections. Isn’t she clever?

Our two quilts will look so different when they are done, even though we are following the same pattern. That’s one of the things I love about quilting, you can really make every quilt your own.

Hope you will join in the fun. Let us know in the comments what colors you chose.

  1. Where can I find the pattern? I have looked on the Handi Quilter but can’t seem to find any info.

  2. I am not sure how to cut out the fabics since I have never done any type of triangles. Will this be covered somewhere?

  3. I have selected all my fabric for the quilt along. Its going to be in blues and whites. I got a white jelly roll and blue jelly rolls. Plus in the middle squares will be a cute teddy bear and puppy dogs. I have pictures but it seems I can’t post it here. So this doesn’t show what I text very well. Its going to be a cute baby quilt 36 x 48. Is there away to share photos?
